Five hundred years ago the border between England and Scotland was wild and windy, with settlements shifting frequently and the border constantly moving north or south. These battles have been won and lost over the hundreds of years, but perhaps the most famous is the Battle of Fladen – in which King James IV of Scotland died in battle. Visitors can follow the path of the battlefield to experience the movement of soldiers and the progress of the battle. The trail is a quiet and peaceful walk with some gentle ups and downs, but can be avoided if you want to stay on the flat.

We loved the 2.6 mile return hike from Craster to the magnificent Dustenberg Castle. Stop at the Craster Tourist Information Center; There are many places From there it’s a short walk through the village to the pretty harbour, then along the beach to the castle You will understand it soon Sheep and cattle graze on the trail, so keep your dog on the trail, as they may misbehave. The castle is free for English Heritage and National Trust members to explore and offers excellent views of the Northumberland coast. On a clear day you can see as far as Bamberg Castle, 12 miles away
