Dog Friendly Vacations In Michigan – Located at the very tip of Michigan, Port Austin is one of the state’s lesser-known gems and is dog-friendly! With nearly 3 miles of sandy beach at nearby Port Crescent State Park, you can spend the day in the clear blue waters or stroll the 30 miles of boardwalks and trails with incredible water views. It frees you from stones.
Dogs are allowed on part of the beach near the mouth of the Pennybug River, which is accessed by a steel bridge that connects to hiking trails near the campsite. Please keep your pets on a leash and remember to clean up after your pets!
Dog Friendly Vacations In Michigan
One of our favorite dog-friendly patios, Pak Backyard, is located in Port Austin! They have a great selection of Michigan craft beers, great pub food and a fun atmosphere. They always have live music so after a long day at the beach you can enjoy eating and drinking on the water with your backpack!
Cozy Pet Friendly Cabin Rentals In Michigan
Just a few hours on the shores of Lake Huron is one of the best spots, Toas Point! This is the only dog beach in Michigan that is fully fenced and dogs are allowed to run freely in the designated area. The campsite is also dog-friendly, so you can bring your dog with you for a week of summer fun!
Boathouse Beer Company and Bouzery is another great place where you can enjoy dinner on the patio with your pets. Located in the center of Tavas, great food and drinks, across the street from another small dog friendly park!
If you’re looking for a unique experience for you and your dog to enjoy in Michigan, Mackinac Island is IT. Hop on board one of the dog-friendly ferries – Star Line or Shepler – and take a trip to a secluded island – another unique experience! Once there, you can explore over 70 miles of trails and viewpoints, dine at one of the many dog-friendly restaurants in the area, and explore Fort Holmes with your dog. Many stores in town welcome four-legged guests – look out for the “Dogs Welcome” sign!
There are also three dog-friendly hotels on Mackinac Island, including Park Place Suites, Sunset Condos, and our favorite Mission Point Resort, which also has a dog-friendly patio!

Marquette, also in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, is one of my favorite places on earth and definitely a place worth putting on your bucket list to explore with your dog. Situated on the shores of Lake Superior, with rolling hills and breathtaking views, it has many hidden treasures to discover.
Plan A Vacation In Pet Friendly Holland, Michigan
Visit and stay at the Staybridge Inn and Suites located downtown. There are plenty of rooms and furnishings that are pet friendly, and for a change the dogs enjoyed the warm weather rather than our camping trips. Staybridge Inn & Suites is a great hotel chain that’s worth checking out in other cities – we’ve stayed at a few places along the way and it’s always great!
Visit one of the many waterfalls in the area, and if you’re feeling adventurous, you can jump into Dead River Falls, a small but short 2.7-mile round trip. If you’re looking for a water view at the top, check out Sugarloaf Mountain or Hogback Mountain, both are very steep but once you get to the top they’re great!
After a day of hiking, visit Fire Dock Brewing’s dog-friendly patio. They brew a lot in house and last year when we visited they even had a cellar which was amazing! If you’re lucky, you’ll see Dia de los Tacos standing outside – the tacos are so good, we’ll be following this food truck all day long!
Traverse City has been named one of the best small towns in the United States, and it definitely lives up to the hype. It’s also dog-friendly and we recommend visiting at least once a year! The Greater Traverse City area is one of Michigan’s premier wine regions, with over 40 different wineries on the peninsula. Come for a day of wine tasting and take your dog to great places like Marie Vineyards, Leaffoot Charlie and Bonobo, all of which are home to bird watchers!

If you want to explore Sleeping Bear National Park and the sand dunes, be sure to visit Beulah and the surrounding area! Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in summer due to the plovers around the lake, but other park trails are available from December 1 to March 31.
Pets are welcome at some quiet beaches year-round, including Albert Beach, which is less busy because it is protected by Mother Nature herself, and Patterson Road Beach at Emperor’s Bluff at Dream Bear Point, known for its beautiful views. on clear days as far south as Manitou Island.

One of our favorite places was the Iron Fish Distillery. The facility is beautiful and offers lots of things to do and try, including its own maple syrup, spirit flights, and my favorite, wood-fired pizza!
When you go, be sure to ask the locals about their favorite places! From the tip of Michigan to the UP to the Midwest and Midwest, there are plenty of things to do for dogs – yes, bring your dogs!

Rachel Jezowski and Wild Goldens Rachel is a freelance graphic designer and content creator living in beautiful northern Michigan with her three Goldens, Barley, Cassie, and Moe! They work hard to pack up and hit the trails to enjoy all that Michigan has to offer for the weekend. When they’re not taking walks or going to the beach (Rachel doesn’t do that, haha!), the dogs love to run and swim in the yard. Rachel also became a huge supporter of rescue after adopting Cassie, a survivor of the Chinese meat trade in 2019. You can follow all their adventures and more on Instagram @ wildgoldens.
